Here we have a new Civil War uniform study of Colonel Elmer E. Ellsworth of the 11th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment in 1861. This study is intended to show how Ellsworth appeared on the day of his death on May 24th 1861. He is shown in the grey officer’s uniform of the 11th New York Fire Zouaves, which is the regiment Ellsworth raised from the volunteer fire companies in New York City upon Lincoln’s initial call for 75,000 Volunteers. Ellsworth, along with the members of his regiment had “filed” (shaved) their heads in 1861 just prior to leaving New York for Washington after having raised the regiment. He is shown here wearing the Engine 14 fire company badge along with a Small round badge for the Baltimore City Guards which was driven into his chest by the blast from James W. Jackson’s shotgun that killed Ellsworth instantly after having removed a massive Confederate flag from the roof of Marshall House Inn located in Alexandria, Virginia. The original painting is done in Acrylic-Gouache on Bristol. Note: This NFT includes unlockable Content which is a PDF File with the full-length hi-res artwork that is individually signed by the artist and also includes a COA with historical description.
