Armando Julio Reverón Travieso was a Venezuelan artist who was a forerunner of Arte Povera and considered one of the most important artists of the 20th century in Latin America. Due to his exotic, eccentric and primitive character, he was known as "El Loco de Macuto". He was a pioneer of the happening, the artistic assembly, the installation, the intervention, the textile sculpture and the mobile. He was the author of more than 450 paintings, 150 drawings and dozens of objects, among which his famous rag dolls stand out. He developed his work in Barcelona, ​​​​Madrid and Paris. He was the victim of attacks, periods of depression and crisis of psychosis caused after contracting typhoid fever in childhood. In 1918 he meets Juanita Mota, his wife and only companion until his death. In 1921 he settled in La Guaira where he built "El Castillete", his workshop and home, contributing to his being recognized as the "Venezuelan Robinson Crusoe". Despite being misunderstood by society, he was admired by artists and intellectuals such as Pablo Picasso, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Fernando Botero, Alí ​​Primera, Gabriel García Márquez, Antonio Saura or Sofía Ímber. In 2007 the MoMA organizes a retrospective of him; the first being dedicated to a Venezuelan and the fourth to a Latin American painter half a century after Diego Rivera (1931), Cândido Portinari (1940) and Roberto Matta (1957). He died unexpectedly at the San Jorge de Catia Sanatorium at the age of 65 after being diagnosed with schizophrenia. Since 2016 his mortal remains rest in the National Pantheon of Venezuela.
