The Surma or Siri people are a group that inhabit the West Omo Zone of South West Ethiopia, while others live in neighbouring South Sudan. Culturally they are similar to the Mursi another ethnic group in Ethiopia.
The Surma have a liking to stick fighting or “Sagine”. This is known as a ceremonial dueling where a boy becomes a man. This act is escpeially important when a man is seeking a bride.
Women beautify themselves by removing their bottom teeth. Their bottom lip is also stretched to fit a clay lip plate. Some women have stopped this practice.
