Bock is a high alcohol lager, stronger than the typical lager, most beers of this style are moderately hopped and have a dominant malt character. Brewed using Vienna and Munich malts with small portions of roasted malts add color to the overall brew. European hops, with their mild character are used, resulting in a cleaner, rounder, less harsh lager. Records as far back as 1378 mentioning bock beer being brewed in Einbeck.
