Wilt Chamberlain, one of the most unstoppable forces the league has ever seen, retired as a four-time MVP, a two-time NBA champion and the first player to ever score 30,000 points. A towering giant, Chamberlain was nicknamed “The Big Dipper” by his peers due to his head nearly touching the ceiling. He’d often have to dip his head to walk through doorways. His superior skills were on display the moment he entered the league in 1959 as a territorial Draft pick, a method that allowed teams to forfeit their first-round pick in order to select a local player. Career The Philadelphia Warriors rookie scored 43 points in his first game, an NBA record for a player making his debut. He became the first player in NBA history to be named MVP and Rookie of the Year in the same season. He averaged 37.6 points and 27 rebounds a night during his rookie campaign in 1959-60 — both league records for a first-year player. On March 2, 1962, Chamberlain set a record that may last forever. The 7-foot-1 center scored 100 points in regulation to help the Warriors beat the New York Knicks, 169-147. Chamberlain was so “on” that he even made 28 of 32 free throws, despite having, up to that point in the season, just a paltry .506 percentage from the stripe. Chamberlain occupies many pages in the NBA’s record book, but his level of dominance could best be summarized by his status as the only player to ever record a double-quadruple, which he logged multiple times. The 13-time All-Star tallied at least 40 points and 40 rebounds on eight separate occasions. He averaged an astronomical 50.4 points and 25.7 rebounds during the Warriors’ final season in Philadelphia. Chamberlain moved with the franchise to San Francisco in 1962 before later returning to the City of Brotherly Love in 1964 via trade to the Philadelphia 76ers. He earned three of his four MVPs with the 76ers. Chamberlain won his first championship in 1967, with the 76ers knocking off his former team, the San Francisco Warriors, in six games. He was dealt to the Los Angeles Lakers in 1968, which marked the first time a reigning NBA MVP had been traded the following season. He spent his final five campaigns in Los Angeles and helped the Lakers reach the NBA Finals four times. The most memorable season was the 1971-72 campaign as the Lakers won a record 33 consecutive games in the regular season before eventually winning the NBA Finals. Chamberlain was named Finals MVP. A bruising offensive force, Chamberlain won the scoring title seven times and is currently the seventh all-time leading scorer after piling up 31,419 points. He is one of seven players to have scored more than 30,000 points in an NBA career. The others include Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Karl Malone, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan and Dirk Nowitzki. Chamberlain won the rebounding title an NBA-record 11 times. He ranks No. 1 all-time in total rebounds with 23,924. Remarkably, despite his defensive tenacity and aggression on the glass, Chamberlain never fouled out of a game. He played a total of 1,045 contests. He led the league in assists in 1968 and finished with 4,643 career helpers. The former University of Kansas star and Harlem Globetrotter played 14 seasons in the NBA. He was enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1979.
