Jean Bartik (1924–2011) was a pioneering American computer programmer and one of the original six women who programmed the ENIAC, the first general-purpose electronic computer. Raised on a farm in Missouri, she broke barriers in mathematics and technology at a time when few women were welcomed into the field. Bartik went on to play a critical role in the evolution of early computers, helping to develop the first commercial systems and advocating for the recognition of women’s contributions to computing.
